CR AND PLOTTING: OCTOBER
Thankfully, Dorchacht's Resistance had a few ideas of their own. In assisting the Mirrorbound who'd found themselves outside of the city due to faulty teleportation, the Resistance were able to make breakthroughs in their magitech, their information gathering, and removing the shackles of society from those affected by it most; while the fate of Dorchacht remains unknown until further notice, things were very much looking up last they'd left them after a particularly big movement, all working parts of a machine oiled perfectly.
Refugees ended up coming with them, and continue to sneak in via small fishing boats every couple of days for those who weren't able to board the initial run, and are now faced with new troubles: Too much freedom, too much choice, a city that seems welcoming and Coven that seems better, but they're wary for all the right reasons. The Monsters who came are less wary of those who look distinctly non-human, and what Witches joined them have a knee-jerk reaction to anything less human-- but they can be rehabilitated out of that too, given that they're willing to change.
But what of the happenings in Aefenglom?
Fright Night
Things seem to settle back into the usual routine; preparations for Samuin and the new year are well underway all throughout the city, and the citizens are glad to have that nasty Dorchacht business behind everyone. They look forward to a fresh start in Noveuer.
Octeuril has surprises left for Aefenglom, yet, however.
This month's event is Fright Night! The night before the full moons, a strange violet mist will pour from indeterminate locations, at all four corners of the city, and spread throughout the streets. It's a side-eye worthy oddity - at least until the effects become known. The mist causes a temporary physical transformation, in Monsters and Witches alike, along with changed behavior: increased aggression, animal instincts, symptoms of ferality even in those who have proper Bonds. (Just let us know if you want to cause any major damage in your rampages.) And it's all player choice!
This means you can go wild with the effects. Give your wolf Turnskin a pair of wings, give your Witch a shiny new set of horns or gills! The transformations can be as graphic or as painless as you'd like. The only limitation is that it does not grant any sort of magic ability, so Monsters cannot gain Witch powers, Witches can't gain a Merrow's siren song, etc. Anything biological, however, is fair game - including features from creatures that aren't included in the Bestiary. This means you can absolutely have a unicorn horn, or be a petalwolf furry.
These are temporary effects, and by the event's end, will fall off, shrivel up, simply disappear, however you choose to handle it. You can also play with different sets of changes through the three days; changes can last anywhere from a few hours to the entire event.
If you wish to opt out of the effects, some characters will be completely immune to the mist, or can be immune to only the transformation, or can be immune to only the behavioral changes.
Unfortunately for the citizens of Aefenglom, it affects many of them too, which means it will be difficult to keep the peace during the three days of the full moons. The Coven will be scrambling to try and do damage control, and there will be some good old fashioned chaos in the streets; they've never dealt with something like this before. It must be some sort of experimental magic - but who could be causing such an awful ruckus? This is where you Mirrorbound come in.
We're trying a new approach this month, and so: Investigation into the source of the mist will be on a sign up basis. Fill out the form below to sign up a team of 3 or more characters that would want to help the Coven figure out where this stuff is coming from and who created it. Four groups will be chosen by RNG to be given leads. Mods will give each group a brief of information and clues to thread it out. Keep in mind that we will not force anyone to share their findings ICly, but it is encouraged!
Characters that aren't chosen can still have an important role in cleanup, rescuing citizens from feral attacks, and trying to contain the damage. The refugees from Dorchacht especially will be alarmed - is this what full moons are like?! Yikes.
The event log will be posted on October 12th at 3pm EST, and will last ICly from the 12th through the 14th - the full moons, the day before, and the day after. Groups for the investigation portion will be chosen when the log goes up and given their briefs. Realtalk, this is a week after the calendar originally said the event would be going up, but we wanted to give you guys something fun and spooky, and it has to be timed with the full moons. This also gives everyone a chance to play more on the intro log!

What part of the city would your characters likely start looking in? Gate/Entrance closest to the forest and River Temese (I am honestly unsure which one this would be) and traveling from there to the Harbor District.
Investigation Notes
The Coven thanks the group for their help. The objective is to find out who did this and why, hopefully bring them in, and destroy the source of the mist if possible. Beginning at the gates means this team will be able to trace a thick vein of the mist backward - along the river, toward the Harbor District, where it increases in concentration. Unfortunately, it only narrows it down to an area of about six city blocks, containing many inns and bars that primarily serve sailors and others who have come to Aefenglom by sea. With the uproar, it might be hard to find informants, but luckily, the Mirrorbound are still regarded well here by those down on their luck. Asking around at various inns will find results in a run-down place called The Rest Shanty, where the matron, an intimidating Arachne woman currently quite cranky from the eight very human feet growing out of the bottoms of her spider legs, seems to know everything that happens around the harbor. Ultimately, she’ll give up a key piece of information - she recently had to kick out a young woman, probably not from around here, who kept spewing anti-Monster propaganda to her regulars. She thinks this woman went down the street, to stay at that hovel above The Red Skies bar. She’ll offer a description if she’s tipped a little extra for the trouble of remembering, or if the boys are especially generous with their compliments.
The Red Skies bar is a very no-ask, no-tell sort of place, with a handful of cheap rooms above the raucous bar. The owner is a stout human who cares very little for what happens in his establishment. Asking probing questions will get him to admit that this woman paid extra to keep her presence there on the down-low. Either threatening his business or straight up bribing him (other methods can be successful as well!) will eventually score a key to the woman’s room upstairs.
She isn’t there, but a few notable items are scattered about. In the middle of the room is a large, cast iron pot bubbling with a thick, disturbingly violet liquid - one of the sources of the mist. It can be destroyed by extreme temperature - high heat or extreme cold. It seems to be an unstable alchemical compound and breaks down easily, according to her notes, which also include a macabre ingredient list of Witch’s blood (lots of it) and Monster parts. Also in her room: a torn ticket for a passenger spot on a cargo ship leaving to head north about an hour from when they find it. If they don’t pursue the ship, she’ll escape the city. If they do, she can be apprehended - though not without a fight, or a clever entrapment.
Interrogating her won’t be easy, but they can learn directly from her that she’s from Dorchacht, and came in September with others, but went rogue, not appreciating their more subtle methods of spreading anti-Monster propaganda (unfortunately, she will not give up the identities of her fellow spies, and she has no idea of their current whereabouts). She convinced four other Witches from Aefenglom to go along with her plan, though two of them thought they were actually helping Monsters avoid going feral, the idiots! She hopes this city tears itself apart. These people are only getting what they deserve, to become Monsters just like the filthy Monsters they love so much.
The Coven would appreciate if the boys brought her in, so that she can be tried and imprisoned for her crimes. Happy hunting!

Will they be able to take anything with them? Notably, the notes and ingredient list and what ingredients that might be around. Are there any particulars to note about the items, such as the scarcity/difficulty of acquiring an item or where the item was procured. Is there anyway to possibly track down where some of the items were acquired.
no subject
2. They can take the notes and ingredient list! There are no more ingredients left laying around, however, as they made a very large batch of this potion and distributed it around the city, where other teams will discover the other locations. If they tried to track down where the ingredients were acquired, it would lead back to the Goblin Market stalls set up around the Shopping and Harbor Districts. Many of them had to be bought even more under-the-table than usual, as they are definitely not 'ethically sourced'.

How tight lipped are the sellers at the Goblin Market stalls who sold the ingredients? Will it be possible to dig deeper into this? I'm assuming since the Goblin Market stalls stuff isn't directly related to the investigations; it would most probably lead into more private investigations.

As far as learning about her, they'll be able to gather from her nice-but-not-expensive clothing and lack of jewelry that she likely didn't hold a high position in Dorchacht's Coven, and she'll begrudgingly and bitterly admit that Morgana never noticed her. But she would have noticed her now! This stunt would have gotten her attention for sure!
One of the other teams' clues include visiting the Goblin Market. The vendors may be more tight lipped when a second batch of Mirrorbound come around asking about their unlisted wares, as they think they'll get raided by law enforcement. Teams can absolutely coordinate their information to put together the whole picture, however!

JK, I got more. Does magic potency translate in blood? IE, is there certain purity levels. So a witch with higher magic potency/circuits/abilities have more conductive blood? Kind of, not every witch is equal when it comes to magic strength.

Character Names: Edelgard, Caspar, Corrin
What part of the city would your characters likely start looking in? The Aristocratic district to start, moving outward in a circle from there to the city edge.
Investigation Notes
The Coven thanks the group for their help. The objective is to find out who did this and why, hopefully bring them in, and destroy the source of the mist if possible. Starting in the Aristocratic District stacks the deck against them, at first. The humans aren’t taking the transformations well at all, and have taken to the streets in panic, fear, or unbridled rage. The trio of Mirrorbound aren’t well-received here, and asking around doesn’t glean much useful information. The wealthy elite are openly distrustful, and happy to lay blame for the changes on them. The mist is thicker here, though - within a radius of about six blocks, or the equivalent of, since the houses are so large and ornate here.
Narrowing their search to this area will reward their efforts with the sight of an orphan Turnskin child with comically large fox ears and a spanking-new pair of tiny, leathery wings sprouted out of her back, rattling the handle of the front door of a huge, fancy home. The windows are all dark, and some are even boarded up on the top floor - no one’s evidently home. Disconcertingly, the smell of old blood is strong on the porch, bloody handprints smeared across the door as if it were slammed shut in a hurry as someone left. If confronted, the orphan jumps, startled, and yells that she didn’t do nuffin’! It was like this when I got here! She’s overly defensive if they try to reprimand her for attempted theft, but if they let it go, she’ll be a little more helpful, repeating that it was like this when she got here, and she didn’t hurt anybody (there isn’t any blood on her clothes, backing up her story). She hasn’t seen anyone go in or out of this big ol’ house. Do you think they’d miss some silverware? Or some candlesticks?
The front door is locked with a little spell, but is easily broken with a traditional lockpicking, or entry can be gained by just busting in a window. The house is empty, and looks as if no one’s been home for a day or two. On the walls are various photos of two humans in fine clothing - a fair-haired boy and girl, so alike that they must be twins. Mist pours down the spiral staircases from the attic, which is a horrible mess. A large cast-iron cauldron is filled with a bubbling, thick violet liquid, the source of the mist. It can be destroyed by extreme temperature - super-heating it, or freezing it. A few scraps of notes include an ingredient list of Witch’s blood and various Monster parts, to create an unstable alchemical compound that breaks down easily. Witch’s blood being a main ingredient explains the smears that cover the attic and lead down the stairs. The body is shoved to the corner carelessly, slumped and pale, long gone cold. It’s the sister from the photos.
By asking around (not an easy task) or tracking with enhanced senses, eventually they can find the brother, wandering the streets, dead-eyed and still covered in his sister’s blood. He’s easy to catch, but hard to interrogate. He’s almost in a fugue state from the shock of losing his twin. Magic can draw out the truth from him back at the Coven, or he can be slowly, carefully encouraged to speak with a little kindness and sympathy. They met a foreign witch, a few weeks ago, you see, him and Lily. She said that in her city, Monsters don’t go feral, because a fog covers up the moons. His sister was all on board with helping her try the same thing here, but he wasn’t so sure. And then… then the foreign witch killed her, said they’d never find enough Witch blood at the markets. He tried to stop her, but she brewed her potion, and got away, and Lily-... He can’t go back to that house, he just can’t.
The group can choose to take him back to the Coven for further interrogation, or decide he’s suffered enough and let him go. If they do take him back, they can recommend leniency, if they’re so inclined, or even extra punishment. Happy hunting!

What part of the city would your characters likely start looking in? Western Residential District and the Shopping/Harbor District connected to it. Lambert'll adjust to where his Puca intuition tells him to go, though -- while it seemed to come from the walls, there's also the chance it was made somewhere and distributed elsewhere in the city or brought in.
Investigation Notes
The Coven thanks the group for their help. The objective is to find out who did this and why, hopefully bring them in, and destroy the source of the mist if possible. Unfortunately, the mist doesn’t come from the Walls, but their intuition is good - it grows thicker as they near the Shopping District. With the looting, and then the clean-up from the looting, the whole district is a disaster zone. The shopkeepers are wary and hostile, especially those whose homes and stores have been broken into and stolen from. They’re quick to blame Mirrorbound for the problems afoot in the city right now, and aren’t too willing to talk. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible to find an informant, however.
They just need to look… below the board, a little, so to speak. With the increased prominence of the Goblin Market this month, there are several of them scattered around the district in pop-up stalls, still trying to make a buck. A few daring ones are even trying to saw off their own new horns or claws to add to their tables. Eventually, by asking the right questions, one of said vendors, a plucky, chatty human sporting a new unicorn horn and a silvery mane, will let slip something interesting. A particular someone has been making their way around the Goblin Market stalls lately, he thinks the woman would absolutely go gaga for this damned horn and unicorn hair. She was buying all kinds of strange things, the vendor has heard. Where she got the money, who knows? The sorts of wares she was after, they don’t come cheap. Why, she bought a pair of mummified Harpy talons off him last week, and she was… His voice will lower to a whisper, she was looking for Witch blood. A lot of it. More than any of them could provide without - well, you know. Doing something illegal. Wouldn’t want that. Try Aisling, across the way, he thinks she spent more time at Aisling’s stall.
Aisling tries to keep mum about her customer, however. It’s a breach of confidentiality to talk about a well-paying customer! She can be convinced, however - by magic, by force or violence, or by cajoling. She’s not happy about all this fur she’s growing, she could be talked into talking by stressing the importance of stopping the mist from wreaking havoc, and she’s quite fond of saving her own skin. No matter how they get the information out of her, it’s the truth. She knows that the woman who has been buying up all the Monster parts, including some more macabre pieces, is renting an apartment above a bakery called Piece of Cake.
If they approach the apartment with stealth, they can catch her in the act of packing up her things - moving around a large cast-iron pot of bubbling violet liquid, one of the apparent sources of the mist, sat square in the center of her living room. She’ll attack with powerful evocation magic the moment she spots the group, unless they subdue her first. She won’t go down without a fight. It could almost be mistaken for feral rage, except she’s wholly unaffected, immune to the mist.
Once they bring her down, interrogating her will be difficult. She refuses to talk initially, but can be made to by force, by magic, or by other methods. Eventually they can get the story out of her, quicker once they find the notes in her bag - at that point, why keep quiet? She tells the story gleefully, of how she and three others met a woman from Dorchacht, who wanted to tear this city apart. The other idiots wanted to help, she thinks, so the woman fed them some crock about helping keep Monsters from turning feral. Her? She wants to see Aefenglom become more like Dorchacht; Monsters are a menace, out of control. A feral turnskin killed her parents four years ago, and she’ll never forgive or forget. She’s glad she helped. She hopes everyone sees the light. It’s only too bad she can’t sail to Dorchacht with the witch who orchestrated the whole thing.
Her notes include information on the potion bubbling away - it can be destroyed with extreme temperature, either by super-heating it or freezing it. It’s unstable, made of Witch blood and a large assortment of the Monster parts she’d been buying from the Goblin Market, and easily breaks down. From there, they can turn her in to the Coven, enact justice in their own way, or whatever other approach they see fit. The Coven, though, would appreciate bringing her in, so that she can be tried and imprisoned for her crimes. Happy hunting!

1. For ultimate outcome: the party will work to subdue her and turn her in! Lambert will use his Puca power to impersonate Aisling and try to get the witch to open her door voluntarily -- and if she doesn't, they'll resort to picking her lock (or breaking the door down). Regardless of whether that works or not initially, with the rest of his group will break in and work together to get her down. Their preferred method of interrogation (thanks to Lambert) is going to be largely by intimidation/force, then she's going to be knocked unconscious and brought to the Coven (a little roughed up, but you know, alive). Do they get a reward for the effort?
1. b. In addition to what she's said about the witch from Dorchacht, they'd would press for a physical description, which they'd hand to the Coven (ofc, another team will be finding said witch, but they don't know that yet).
2. None of them really have a way to readily dispose of the cauldron -- can they just leave that for the Coven to handle once they've reported it?
3. Is there anything of value in the apartment itself that characters could steal, besides miscellaneous monster parts? Certain members of the party are less scrupulous than others...
4. While they're at it -- Lambert's probably going to ask the Coven witches (a little rudely, but only after they're paid) why the Coven hasn't cracked down on those selling monster parts and witch blood so openly.
no subject
1b. They can get a physical description out of her. Those at the Coven likely won't know the Dorchacht witch on sight, but they will have witches keeping an eye out for her on the streets.
2. Yes, if they can't manage to destroy it, they can let someone know at the Coven and they'll take care of it, with sincere thanks and credit to the group for finding it so it could be destroyed.
3. The misguided Witch has been living pretty rough, but there is a good-sized pouch of cune notes still that haven't been spent on Monster parts - about 75,000 cunes, give or take. Nobody's likely to know if all that money just happens to disappear.
4. The answer he'll get amounts to basically that the Goblin Market has not always been so open with their wares. Mirrorbound intervention last month did a number on Black Market vendors, resulting in this current trend of "ethically sourced" in the Goblin Market. Some parts, things that can be given or sold freely such as feathers or shed scales, have legitimate use in potion-making and magitech, and they can't, say, forbid a Harpy from willingly selling their own feathers for cash.
While they have tried to put an end to the Black Market selling un-ethically-sourced wares in the past, it's difficult to track these vendors down because they've been doing this for a while and know how to hide and break the law. That said, they are appalled, and do feel regret that it came to this. Crack-downs are more likely in the future now that they know this is going on to this extent.

Character Names: Jusis, Wataru, Lalli
What part of the city would your characters likely start looking in? Systematically working from where the mist is thickest out...they'll sweep the outer edges of the city, through the districts to the harbor?
Investigation Notes
The Coven thanks the group for their help. The objective is to find out who did this and why, hopefully bring them in, and destroy the source of the mist if possible. Starting at the city’s edge to find where the mist thickens leads them to the Eastern Residential District. The (mostly) humans here are highly upset by current events, many of them bearing extreme changes the closer they live to a particular six-block radius within the district close to the Wall. It’s hard to narrow it down further just by following the patterns of the mist; this area is saturated with the stuff.
This close to to the Bright Wall, the houses have grown shabbier and smaller, more run-down, though still nicer than the houses across the River Temese. A few Monsters, similarly affected and bearing their changes with strength and determination, live out here amongst the humans, and may be the group’s best bet to ask questions of. A pair of Puca in particular, siblings, seem like they might know something. One is reluctant to talk in anything but riddles, but the other gushes about Mirrorbound to her, and says that they must be trying to help fix things! They tried to fix things in Dorchacht, you know! They freed Monsters there. Hopefully the group will confirm that they’re trying to help, because it will make them both more cooperative.
Finally, after some conversation and cajoling (and maybe a few autographs for the brother Puca), the sister will admit that someone very off has been hanging around their neighborhood lately. Maybe 18, a Witch from the Coven, she thinks, but so young and overly enthusiastic. She doesn’t trust it. He comes around preaching that Monsters need to control themselves, that the possibility of going feral is the root of all problems in the city. He says that if they never went feral, they would be more accepted, would be able to live better lives like the humans do. She hates his attitude, hates that he indirectly places all the blame on her kind and acts like he cares sooo much about them. The siblings will give them a description of the Witch in question, and state that he’s been staying a few nights in Auntie Lem’s house (which happens to be right in that six-block radius). She’s much too nice to stupid humans.
Auntie Lem, a dog-and-lion chimera currently sprouting dragon horns and parrot wings, regards the Mirrorbound group with a frown when they reach her house. She stands in front of the door with her arms crossed, the picture of a stern auntie. She knows why they’re here, and she cuts right to the chase. They’re after that Witch boy, aren’t they? They had best not hurt him. He’s trying his best, he’s just- a little misguided at the moment. It’s not his fault that snake of a foreign woman has been whispering in his ear. He’s young and impressionable and thinks he can save the world. Eventually, either by force or by assuring her that they don’t plan to hurt the Witch boy, she’ll reluctantly let them into the house and up the stairs to the loft room. Inside are a scattering of notes, and a bubbling cauldron of purple liquid. According to the notes, the substance, the source of the mist, is a volatile alchemical compound made of Witch blood and a vast array of Monster parts, and highly unstable. It can be broken down easily by extreme temperatures - super-heating, or freezing the substance. When they first reach the room, they may be waylaid from the cauldron, however - because the Witch boy is currently escaping out the window. He doesn’t seem likely to fight, but he’s a fast runner, and not keen on being caught. Unless they trick him or attack him, he’ll be difficult to catch.
Eventually, once they’ve got him cornered, he’ll be easy to bring in, bursting into messy tears immediately and loudly proclaiming that he didn’t know what they were doing! It wasn’t supposed to be like this! He only wanted to help! The woman from Dorchacht told him that this would be a spell to spread a fog over the city that would block out the effects of the full moons, and keep Monsters from going feral. He didn’t expect her to murder Lily, or that the potion would do- any of this. He was stupid to trust her, and he realizes that now. He’s highly, sincerely upset, and can’t stop crying through the whole interrogation, offering information readily if he knows it.
From there, they can turn him in to the Coven, or enact justice however they see fit. They can also recommend leniency in his sentencing, should they take him in to the proper authorities, or they can recommend he be punished more harshly. The Coven will certainly take their words into account. Happy hunting!
