Test Drive: May

Welcome to [community profile] aefenglom's test drive! All threads can be considered game canon, should you choose to do so; regardless of if you pick specific threads to remain canon to the game, the prompts and test drive itself will be. This will be touched on later in-game, so it's fairly important to note! Aside from that, here are some quick reminders:

Reserves Open Today! If you're interested in securing a spot, put one in! We accept applications without reserves too, of course. Reserves will expire three days before the end of the application period, on the 28th.
Applications Open The 24th! These will last until the end of the month, the 31st, with the intro log going on up June 1st. The application page can be found here.
    • If you have any questions about the game or the world, please refer to the FAQ page; if you still have questions, feel free to ask them! For questions specific to the test drive, please ask them on the appropriate thread.
    • For the purposes of the test drive, your character will have access to all magics taught by the Coven if they're a Witch, and as much of their shifted form as you'd like if they're a Monster. Feel free to play around and experiment with each!
    • While current players won't be allowed to post top levels on the test drive itself, feel free to reference or play with the dreams in-game.
    • Test drive threads can be used as samples for your applications!

    With that taken care of...

You feel like you're floating. Around you, colors and sounds and smells swirl as if trapped in a whirlpool, vibrancy and hue ever shifting. The more you watch them, the less solid they are; they only become clear out of the corner of your eye. The area around you begins to feel more solid as well, until your feet are on the ground, the wind brushes playfully against your face -

and you know one thing, and one thing alone: this is a dream, and an incredibly realistic one at that.

The Eternal Fall

The smell of autumn leaves surrounds you, a myriad of colors sparkling into existence at the same time. Despite the warmth and light, the air feels heavy and stiff, as if on razor's edge. The forest is eerily silent - not a bird, bug, or rodent dares to stir - and when you do hear something, it's the high-pitched crying, whining, weeping, sobbing, howling sounds of something far off. The tunnel of bent branches invites you further with an unpleasant compulsion; though fighting it and turning around finds you in front of a chilly, damp cave alight with the faint, cool glow of bubbling fountains and streams.

The Compulsion
Unable to sway yourself from the call of the forest - or maybe you're simply curious as to where it leads - your feet pull you further and further into the autumnal tunnel. The cry from before grows more distant, but in return, the air weighs even heavier on your shoulders than before. The branches hang lower and lower as well, as if pushed by gravity, until their leaves smack your face, twigs offering small cuts from the thorns protruding from their bark.

But you can't stop. Not now. The end of the tunnel seems so close; but it's seemed that way for a while now, you suppose, and you've already come this far - you might as well stay the course, wherever it might lead.

The further you go, the brighter everything becomes, and you realize it's the leaves surrounding you; they've begun to glow, encouraged by the sunlight streaming in from above, and the wind begins to whisper in your ear. At first, it's only encouraging things, or silly facts - harmless words, but as the foliage begins to shimmer and reflect your image, the wind's words turn colder. Within those reflections on the autumn tunnel, you begin to see your worst moments - morally, ethically, emotionally. The things you don't want anyone else to know, that you'd feel ashamed or struck for anyone - especially those close to you - to see. The wind becomes louder as the scenes play out one right after another, boldly declaring your true feelings as they were in that moment, good or bad.

Worst of all - you still can't bring yourself to turn back, even as your mind begins to free itself from the tunnel's compulsion. Maybe someone else can help out, if they're not too taken by their own memories, or maybe the shock of sharing such private secrets will jolt you and anyone else back to reality. Either way, it's that, or staying stuck watching your worst memories play on repeat for what feels like the rest of your life.

The Cry
While not compelled by any means, you still feel a curious draw down the path in front of you; as you follow the leaf tunnel, with others or alone, you find another, less-traveled path. Following it reveals a large pond colored orange and gold by the reflection of the area it's in, sunlight and shadows playing on its surface. At a glance, it seems to be rather shallow, but that's hardly the truth.

You realize, after a moment, that the crying has continued, evidently coming from the water. Looking closer, the culprit is an infected Merrow, who - upon begin seen - shrieks and dives for whoever's looking at it with the clear intent to drag them down beneath the water. Its claws are extra sharp, its teeth similar to a shark in number and shape, and its scales have turned a pale black; an oil-like substance flows from beneath them and from its gums as well, shimmering the same way gasoline does in the light, and its eyes are the tell-tale white of a Shade.

It isn't impossible to fight it to get away, especially as some of you have new abilities at hand, and some of you have a few neat changes to help that along. Once distance is successfully put between you and the infected Merrow, it howls in a wet, warbly voice, visibly frustrated. Unlike ordinary Merrows, who can walk on land and have legs as long as they stay dry, this Merrow can't seem leave its pond at all, and electricity sparks from it like little static shocks in its irritation. It does dive back under once it realizes it can't reach you, resurfacing as your character's most important person in an attempt to lure them back. The expressions are far too real, too genuine; even those aware it's a Merrow might be fooled. While its voice isn't a perfect mimicry, the song it begins to sing has with it notes of yearning and beckoning to join it, join your beloved person, in the water.

The Cave
Pulling yourself from curiosity or compulsion, the cave behind you - in front of you, if you've turned around - gives off an oddly pure feeling. Like an oasis in a desert, it feels refreshing and calm; incredibly safe, compared to the eerie call of the forest it's in. Within the cave are pools of water that glow and glimmer from the magic runes found around them. The runes shift similar to a mirage whenever you try to focus on them; and try as you might, you can't glimpse what they say exactly.

It isn't so hard to figure out though, as the pools of water surrounded by them have a pleasingly cold temperature, while those without them are near scalding. A few of the latter have runes around them, but they're not glowing like the rest - feeding a little magic into them changes this immediately, and steam rises in a sudden blast as the water cools rapidly. The opposite can be done for the colder pools too - taking their magic somehow or ruining the runes will make them bubble and boil as they surge in temperature.

But that isn't all the cave has to offer. Moving further inward, you get the feeling you're going down - beneath the ground and the enchanting forest. Eventually, the cave widens out to a massive underground lake, multiple waterfalls pouring into it; despite their number and size, the room is completely silent. All tunnels seem to lead to this one room, with a few of them looking more man-made than natural. Traversing other tunnels leads you into a maze that only ever brings you to the lake, or to the cave's entrance, no matter how many different paths you take.

Something different happens eventually though; signs of life begin to appear, or at least signs that life once lived there. Leather pouches rotted by the dampness of the cave hang on sharp nails beaten into the cave walls, with boots in similar condition strewn here and there. Torn, soaking clothing lays in piles in the tunnels, and candles burnt down to their wick's end stand in shelves carved from the navy blue and black stone. There's broken toys and books too waterlogged to read, instruments with snapped strings or clogged holes, and - most peculiarly - smooth, round devices that heavily resemble large pocketwatches or hand mirrors. They refuse to turn on though, either due to age or due to the wetness of the air.

Bendy jumps in alarm as his things clatter against the stone floor. That's his stuff! Or, it's someone's stuff, that he had for a little bit. Now he'd lost the top, and the cool glass thingy! Oh, wait, the human, the human's hurt, that's more important, actually.

He steps in closer to look, then pulls back again. Did he brush against the human, is that why he's hurt? It's not the usual type of wound he's seen, but that just means he could make it worse if he checks. A dribble of ink creeps down Bendy's forehead as he dithers. This is different from the usual way of hurting people, but he's still pretty sure it's his fault somehow.

Hesitantly, Bendy reaches out to tug at the hem of Steven's shirt, urging him to follow towards the lake.

[ He still remembered the last time he had seen Shiro like this. Still remembered what had come after; Shiro's headaches, his confusion. How could they not have seen it sooner? How could they not have known? Then again, maybe Keith had been blinded by his own hope; his own desire and longing and refusal to believe that Shiro would be anything other than okay. Maybe if he hadn't left for the Blade of Marmora so soon after Shiro's return he might have noticed. Maybe if he'd been more attentive, maybe if, in the battle with Zarkon he had given more, maybe then, Shiro wouldn't have... ]

Shiro... [ He breathed again, hand sliding from his shoulder, gripping the back of the other's neck. For a moment there was something aching in the red paladin's expression, something broken and forlorn- but Keith did his best to shadow it quickly, shuddering out a breath, before hugging the other back, holding him tight, hands gripping the tatters of the other's shirt. Just holding on. At least until Shiro was guiding distance between them again. Slowly Keith realized what he must have looked like- how much he had changed from that point, to this. ]

It's- it's hard to explain. [ He managed, giving the other a shaky smile, expression softening, hands gripping the other's arms. As if he thought the other would slip away, disappear between his fingertips if he let go. ]

It's just- it's been a few years.

I'm not cute, either!

[What is flirting and can he eat it? Apart from that, though, she has a point, of course.]

... There were some boots a while back. Someone definitely used to come here.

[How long ago, it's hard to say. He's anything but a magical expert, or maybe he'd know if the magic in the runes could "run out" and require renewal with time. As it is: her guesses are as good as his.]

[ There's little to be missed by the whispers that the images can't convey just as well. Any good story--or in this case, any miserable one--can get its intent across just as well in complete silence. An attentive audience will understand.

Bendy staggers through the leaves, disoriented by the assault of unwelcome images and uncoordinated from his shifted body. The demon's pitch-dark form stands out all too readily against the color and bright glowing of the leaves. In turn, Nicolas stands out just as clearly, a human clearly ready to attack.

The sight immediately puts Bendy on edge. His stance widens, shoulders hunching and the spines along his back bristling; the changes brought on by this strange dreamscape only accentuate his look of a snarling animal. He's got no voice with which to growl, but the posture is all too clear; if Nicolas draws that weapon, Bendy won't hesitate to strike back.

[ Keith's disquiet isn't hard to miss, but it matches his own. It makes sense and he realizes now that he looks like hell - certainly worse than the last time he fell off a Galra ship. He smiles, more comfortably than he feels. His voice lulls back into a sweet easiness. ]

No kidding? And I was about to say you looked younger, [ he teases, patting Keith's shoulder warmly. He's not much of a funny guy, but for Keith he'll try a little joke if it will help him. The smile drops back, teeth still showing the afterimage of a grin as he looks over Keith's face more clearly. He has grown up. It explains things that he didn't think needed explaining; there was certainly a sense of relief shared between the two of them that he realizes now would have been more unusual under other circumstances. Oh, but he hardly has words for how good it is to see his friend again. ]

...I'm sorry, Keith. I started looking for you and the others as soon as I woke up, but... I guess I was out longer than I thought. Maybe I can't be surprised. [ His head shakes. He's never let his hair grow out this much, but he gets the feeling "a few years" would do the trick. His smile returns, affectionate. ] I'm glad you're here - or I guess I'm glad I'm here. Where're Lance and the others? Is everyone else alright?

[One of the pluses about Caren is she'd be okay about being used. She's kinda used to it, and really, maybe it'd be useful for her too, and any allies she has.]

Most people don't.

[She wouldn't say she has one either.]

But as you say, it seems we've been drawn together. Do you think it's a trap?

[It sounds like a joke, but it isn't. Even being brought together to socialize could benefit someone other then themselves.]

Rather go with attractive? Sexy? Handsome?

[She's enjoying tease-flirting with him so much. Maybe it doesn't help that his ears flick, and oh...do they look so soft.]

Right? And I saw too that there were old network devices. They don't work anymore-could be a lot of things that caused it but-they're certainly a generation outdated.

Add to that that someone had to write the runes, and they still respond to magic...

I'd rather be thrilled over a mystery then get frustrated over it.

We can theorize at least?

[She shrugs, offering a slight smile as she moved to settle down nearby. Not too close-she doesn't want to be rude and get into her bubble after all.]

And maybe it's better that it's theorized on paper before testing. That way, you won't ruin your notebook via successful application.

[ Keith huffed out a breath of laughter at the other's poor excuse for a joke, using the hand on Shiro's arm to swat him gently for it. ]

I hope not, it was hard enough to get people to take me seriously. Looking younger isn't going to help. [ Whatever fears Keith had- he would have to deal with those later. At the end of the day, this was still Shiro. Just a different version of him, and Keith wasn't ever going to abandon him just because of this slight complication. ]

I looked for you too. [ Just like he always would, it was impossible for Keith to ever think of giving up on Shiro. To stop looking for him. ] I've missed you.

[ It had only been a month since the last time he had seen Shiro- but that hadn't made him miss the other any less. Could he survive without Shiro? Sure, but if he had a choice, well... ]

They're fine- or at least I think they're fine. Allura's here too, but the others are back in our own universe, I assume.

His ears are very soft indeed. And he will absolutely claw her to pieces if she tries to touch them right now. He refuses to admit defeat by, oh say, walking away, though - and, for what it's worth, he would like to solve the mystery, too.]

Tiamé glares at Iramaat. Once upon a time she might have tried not to show her anger (her oh-so-justified anger) but these days she relishes the cold fury that burns in her and thinks nothing of letting it loose. Not that she's seen Iramaat recently to try it out, of course.

"I am not here because I am following at your coattails, Iramaat. Make no mistake there. I have more important business in my life than pining for a betrayer and oathbreaker." She hisses the last word like she's tasted something foul. It's not a nice thing to call other fae, to tell the truth.

"You're still as self-centered as ever."
wylderrant: (2)

[personal profile] wylderrant 2019-05-22 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oathbreaker? Pish-posh, I wasn't the one who changed courts," Iramaat replies airily. She certainly feels no guilt over whatever it was she's supposed to have done to make Tiame hate her so. Whatever it was, it wasn't her fault (she thinks). Then again, Tiame is a villain, so who knows what goes on in that head of hers?

"I'm here to do what I do best - be a hero," she continues with a laugh, "Although it was a bit involuntary. Still, nothing for it, hmmm? Magic is magic!"
gravenrose: (Default)

[personal profile] gravenrose 2019-05-22 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Tiamé knows that having this argument with Iramaat won't help and certainly won't lead anywhere positive. And yet... and yet. She takes a breath, stills herself--she is winter chill, a frozen pond. Don't let her see that she gets to you.

"Changing courts isn't the same and you know it," she says with a semblance of composure.

"You've never been a hero, no matter what you tell yourself," she continues. "But yes. Magic is magic. And magic seems to have brought us here..." She sweeps a hand over the silent lake. "What do you know of it?"
gravenrose: (Default)

[personal profile] gravenrose 2019-05-22 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"No one?" Her voice is cold and sharp, disbelieving. It cuts like a winter wind and she purses her lips into a thin, unhappy line. She studies the SQUIP with disdain, internally notes it as human (probably) and dismisses it just as quickly. Humans have uses like all mortals. Tiamé doesn't wish them ill but nor does she have a particularly strong care for them.

"It is akin to the Hedge, no doubt," she says with a confidence that seems unsuited to the situation. "Things change and twist and double back on themselves. I've seen it before." She pauses, frowns.

"I'm just not used to it effecting me."

[ Her feelings on Jace aren't something she's going to get into. A small part of her does wonder if he will miss her now that she's gone, but she knows he will act otherwise. She did say, once, that his loss to her would be like that of a puppy she once had. It would be fitting if he returned the sentiment. But she doesn't think so. She likes to believe she's had a greater effect.

No matter. ]

"Very little honestly," Iramaat chirps happily, "They stripped away most of our power here, though. And they might try to change us. It's not very pleasant, honestly - although I don't now if it's deliberate or not."

She shrugs, clasping her hands at the small of her back.

"I wonder how you'd handle being here..."

The sickness is called the Cwyld. Notably, symptoms include disfiguration, loss of reason, and an insatiable hunger. A cure has yet to be found. I don't know much about that creature in particular - but I believe it would now be called a "Shade." It will continue to become more monstrous and dangerous as its condition can only worsen.
