Test Drive: May

Welcome to [community profile] aefenglom's test drive! All threads can be considered game canon, should you choose to do so; regardless of if you pick specific threads to remain canon to the game, the prompts and test drive itself will be. This will be touched on later in-game, so it's fairly important to note! Aside from that, here are some quick reminders:

Reserves Open Today! If you're interested in securing a spot, put one in! We accept applications without reserves too, of course. Reserves will expire three days before the end of the application period, on the 28th.
Applications Open The 24th! These will last until the end of the month, the 31st, with the intro log going on up June 1st. The application page can be found here.
    • If you have any questions about the game or the world, please refer to the FAQ page; if you still have questions, feel free to ask them! For questions specific to the test drive, please ask them on the appropriate thread.
    • For the purposes of the test drive, your character will have access to all magics taught by the Coven if they're a Witch, and as much of their shifted form as you'd like if they're a Monster. Feel free to play around and experiment with each!
    • While current players won't be allowed to post top levels on the test drive itself, feel free to reference or play with the dreams in-game.
    • Test drive threads can be used as samples for your applications!

    With that taken care of...

You feel like you're floating. Around you, colors and sounds and smells swirl as if trapped in a whirlpool, vibrancy and hue ever shifting. The more you watch them, the less solid they are; they only become clear out of the corner of your eye. The area around you begins to feel more solid as well, until your feet are on the ground, the wind brushes playfully against your face -

and you know one thing, and one thing alone: this is a dream, and an incredibly realistic one at that.

The Eternal Fall

The smell of autumn leaves surrounds you, a myriad of colors sparkling into existence at the same time. Despite the warmth and light, the air feels heavy and stiff, as if on razor's edge. The forest is eerily silent - not a bird, bug, or rodent dares to stir - and when you do hear something, it's the high-pitched crying, whining, weeping, sobbing, howling sounds of something far off. The tunnel of bent branches invites you further with an unpleasant compulsion; though fighting it and turning around finds you in front of a chilly, damp cave alight with the faint, cool glow of bubbling fountains and streams.

The Compulsion
Unable to sway yourself from the call of the forest - or maybe you're simply curious as to where it leads - your feet pull you further and further into the autumnal tunnel. The cry from before grows more distant, but in return, the air weighs even heavier on your shoulders than before. The branches hang lower and lower as well, as if pushed by gravity, until their leaves smack your face, twigs offering small cuts from the thorns protruding from their bark.

But you can't stop. Not now. The end of the tunnel seems so close; but it's seemed that way for a while now, you suppose, and you've already come this far - you might as well stay the course, wherever it might lead.

The further you go, the brighter everything becomes, and you realize it's the leaves surrounding you; they've begun to glow, encouraged by the sunlight streaming in from above, and the wind begins to whisper in your ear. At first, it's only encouraging things, or silly facts - harmless words, but as the foliage begins to shimmer and reflect your image, the wind's words turn colder. Within those reflections on the autumn tunnel, you begin to see your worst moments - morally, ethically, emotionally. The things you don't want anyone else to know, that you'd feel ashamed or struck for anyone - especially those close to you - to see. The wind becomes louder as the scenes play out one right after another, boldly declaring your true feelings as they were in that moment, good or bad.

Worst of all - you still can't bring yourself to turn back, even as your mind begins to free itself from the tunnel's compulsion. Maybe someone else can help out, if they're not too taken by their own memories, or maybe the shock of sharing such private secrets will jolt you and anyone else back to reality. Either way, it's that, or staying stuck watching your worst memories play on repeat for what feels like the rest of your life.

The Cry
While not compelled by any means, you still feel a curious draw down the path in front of you; as you follow the leaf tunnel, with others or alone, you find another, less-traveled path. Following it reveals a large pond colored orange and gold by the reflection of the area it's in, sunlight and shadows playing on its surface. At a glance, it seems to be rather shallow, but that's hardly the truth.

You realize, after a moment, that the crying has continued, evidently coming from the water. Looking closer, the culprit is an infected Merrow, who - upon begin seen - shrieks and dives for whoever's looking at it with the clear intent to drag them down beneath the water. Its claws are extra sharp, its teeth similar to a shark in number and shape, and its scales have turned a pale black; an oil-like substance flows from beneath them and from its gums as well, shimmering the same way gasoline does in the light, and its eyes are the tell-tale white of a Shade.

It isn't impossible to fight it to get away, especially as some of you have new abilities at hand, and some of you have a few neat changes to help that along. Once distance is successfully put between you and the infected Merrow, it howls in a wet, warbly voice, visibly frustrated. Unlike ordinary Merrows, who can walk on land and have legs as long as they stay dry, this Merrow can't seem leave its pond at all, and electricity sparks from it like little static shocks in its irritation. It does dive back under once it realizes it can't reach you, resurfacing as your character's most important person in an attempt to lure them back. The expressions are far too real, too genuine; even those aware it's a Merrow might be fooled. While its voice isn't a perfect mimicry, the song it begins to sing has with it notes of yearning and beckoning to join it, join your beloved person, in the water.

The Cave
Pulling yourself from curiosity or compulsion, the cave behind you - in front of you, if you've turned around - gives off an oddly pure feeling. Like an oasis in a desert, it feels refreshing and calm; incredibly safe, compared to the eerie call of the forest it's in. Within the cave are pools of water that glow and glimmer from the magic runes found around them. The runes shift similar to a mirage whenever you try to focus on them; and try as you might, you can't glimpse what they say exactly.

It isn't so hard to figure out though, as the pools of water surrounded by them have a pleasingly cold temperature, while those without them are near scalding. A few of the latter have runes around them, but they're not glowing like the rest - feeding a little magic into them changes this immediately, and steam rises in a sudden blast as the water cools rapidly. The opposite can be done for the colder pools too - taking their magic somehow or ruining the runes will make them bubble and boil as they surge in temperature.

But that isn't all the cave has to offer. Moving further inward, you get the feeling you're going down - beneath the ground and the enchanting forest. Eventually, the cave widens out to a massive underground lake, multiple waterfalls pouring into it; despite their number and size, the room is completely silent. All tunnels seem to lead to this one room, with a few of them looking more man-made than natural. Traversing other tunnels leads you into a maze that only ever brings you to the lake, or to the cave's entrance, no matter how many different paths you take.

Something different happens eventually though; signs of life begin to appear, or at least signs that life once lived there. Leather pouches rotted by the dampness of the cave hang on sharp nails beaten into the cave walls, with boots in similar condition strewn here and there. Torn, soaking clothing lays in piles in the tunnels, and candles burnt down to their wick's end stand in shelves carved from the navy blue and black stone. There's broken toys and books too waterlogged to read, instruments with snapped strings or clogged holes, and - most peculiarly - smooth, round devices that heavily resemble large pocketwatches or hand mirrors. They refuse to turn on though, either due to age or due to the wetness of the air.

Enemy? No.

[What a peculiar question. It doesn't quite stop the flame dancing in her hair or her eyes, but it does make her re-evaluate the situation.]

We're both stuck in this weird place, and you've got enough sense to deal with stuff like that shapeshifter. That makes you the opposite of an enemy in my book.

She could be hiding it under a sleeve or something, though.]

[A. The Cry]

[Notte always did say that it’s his kind heart that would get him into trouble.

Euden is already aware of this, of course. It’s hard not to notice with how much Notte tends to scold him in the past while Zethia looks on with exasperated concern. Even Cleo and Elisanne would say something about how he can be so kind to everyone—a trait that is to be admired but is also a weakness.

He does with that his companions are with him as he reaches an area that doesn’t seem to be as busy. Euden looks around, curious, before he he hears it.

The sound of someone crying.

He jerks into action at the cry, running to the edge of the water. But as he comes close, Euden yelps in surprise when the Merrow attacks him, quickly stumbling back. He reaches back for his sword, only to realize that—oh, right. A long, serpentine tail suddenly seems to appear, whacking at the Merrow before it comes close, practically sending it back into the water. Despite himself, he winces in sympathy and can’t resist coming close to the water again.]

Um, are you—

[Euden stops talking, his breath hitching when he suddenly sees a familiar girl appear instead.]

….Zethia?

[B. The Cave]

[After managing to get away from the Merrow, Euden stumbles into the cave and can’t help but look in awe.

It’s nothing quite like what he’s seen before, but at the same time, it is. And he can’t help but want to explore the cave, so he does. However, it seems that even the tunnel of mazes only leads him back to the lake or the entrance, so he decides to keep trying anyway.

Until he stumbles across the strange devices.

It has him tilting his head to the side, curious as he crouches down and picks up the round device, his thumb moving to clear the surface from how dirty it appears.]

I wonder what this is…

[This is nothing like he’s seen before.]

Fuuka Yamagishi | Persona 3 | Undecided (Fae or Merrow)

[personal profile] eyesees 2019-05-19 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
🔮 COMPULSION.
    [ Not this again.

It's hard to forget how everything seemed to fell apart after that day, so the woods wouldn't need to try hard to force Fuuka to remember what happened in the Abyss of Time. At first, it's only a flicker, voices faint and familiar fading in and out. Words missing, taken out of context, but still eliciting a very real and visceral response from the teen. She hardly notices the otherworldly glow of the forest by this point, her focus elsewhere.

She almost misses the sound of a twig snap as someone approaches, too caught up in her attempts to block out the shadows of the past from filtering back in. She whirls around quickly, dark eyes wide as she clutches both hands defensively close to her chest. ]

    Wh-who's there?

🔮 CRY.
[ Maybe it's because she knows what it's like to be alone and scared that makes Fuuka decide to walk down this path. In some ways, it's just as hard to find her way here as it is in the enchanted forest; with no clear trail to guide her, she follows the sound of crying rather than the overgrown path beneath her feet.

When she finds the pond there, she slows her pace. ]
Hello? [ She knows she heard someone, but— ] ...Is anybody out there?

    ( OPTION 1 : FAE )
[ Investigating the pool, as it turns out, was a bad idea. On the plus side, at least she knows where the crying was coming from. But whatever this thing was (a... mermaid? she's seen stranger things, but this dream is just Weird), as it comes up to take a clawed swipe at her ankles, Fuuka jumps back. And up... and up some more. ]

    Ahh—?!

[ She doesn't seem to realize the pair of wings on her back until a literal fight or flight instinct kicks in. With a heavy and swift flap, she's lifted a few feet off the ground, hovering there with little to no effort. Really. She's not thinking about it (THIS DREAM IS WEIRD!!), her lithe form suspended in the air, well enough away from imminent danger.

But that poses its own problem. Namely: ]

    I, I can't get them to stop!

[ She's not sure how to land! So please help?! Either by doing something about the infected merrow, or pulling her back down, she doesn't care which!! ]

    ( OPTION 2 : MERROW )
[ Through her own (decidedly non-faery) fast thinking, Fuuka has managed to keep herself out of the merrow's grasp, although doing so has been quite a feat. She's winded, keeping enough space between herself and the pond, and just as she manages to convince herself that trying to find someone to help is the best thing to do here, something surfaces. Something wearing the face of someone she knows. ]

It can't be. What are you doing here..?

[ But why? This is supposed to be a dream, but he looks too real, and seeing him struggle to tread water, Fuuka blanches. Everything is screaming in her head that it isn't him, it couldn't possibly be him—but logic hardly matters, and she's seen enough to know that the world doesn't always make sense. They all lost him once, and now, if she could have a chance to save him...

She'll find herself caught, reeled in like a fish on a line. All she has to do is get close enough, and if no one intervenes, that is exactly what happens—with a splash and a sudden flurry of fins. ]

🔮 CAVE.
[ Fuuka is grateful when the labyrinthine cave finally deposits her somewhere different than she was before. It looks like there were people living here—even if it's clear that they're long gone. It's beautiful and sad; clearly the tides have washed away so much of what was left behind. She takes interest in a few items—toys, the books and the hanging pouches—but there's something recognizable in the dregs that have been left behind. ]

I wonder if letting them dry out will get them to turn on again...

[ The strange pocket watches. She's collected a few of them now, carrying them in her hiked-up skirt to a place where she can sit and examine them closer. She's always been good with technology, and even if she hasn't seem anything quite like them before, they're similar enough to things she's familiar with. Now if she just had something to pry one of them open...

But she's not alone here, and taking another winding turn, she comes across someone else. Still holding the spoils of her search in her slightly outstretched skirt, Fuuka takes a reflexive step back. ]

Oh! [ A beat. She didn't expect anyone to be all the way out here. Fuuka offers a tentative smile. ] Um, hello.

[Not important.]

[She's here. She's safe. She's obviously a little upset being on her own, but she's safe. Jae-Ha lets out a little sigh, a mixture of relief that she's safe and frustration that no one else has managed to find her. (Because it's utterly unthinkable that Hak or at least Kija wouldn't follow Yona right into the pits of Hell if that's where she led them.) He's going to have to give them a piece of mind when they eventually turn up. Or, in other words, give them shit once enough tension from all the anxiety about Yona's well-being passes.]

"Why forwards?" Toby asks, reluctant to advance. A foot shy of her adult height and as lanky as a teenager, she's heavy for her size and shape, definitely denser than a human would be. "It only started getting bad in here away from the path."

Her dreams don't tend to feature dream logic, even when there's some fantastical element. She's pretty sure the environment is going to respond to anything she says, too, but she has to say something.

Slowly she explains, "I was named for the human who helped my parents. We don't allow most humans to know we exist, yet, though the time will come. Tobias might well be the best of them."

And he's condescending and doesn't see anyone but you, maybe, as a person. You can't trust aliens, the wind cuts in, and Toby narrows her eyes. She doesn't want that to feel as true as it does.

A real monster...Berserker has half a mind to show him a "real" monster, but that would take more effort than he's willing to expend. He stretches his wings out to their full span, something he hadn't done just yet. As the pieces of him are new, it's painful, but his face doesn't show it.

Are you a monster? Maybe there's a reason you're called one. You might not look like one, but your heart holds the truth.

[The flash of metal as Yang moves her arm inevitably draws Yona's attention, but she's quick to chastise herself, remind herself not to stare. It's an odd prosthesis, certainly, but no one likes to be stared at. No staring allowed!

She focuses her attention on Yang's face instead and finds eyes the same violet shade as hers, which makes her smile a little warmer when she gives it again. That's rare, and oddly nice to see.]

I did. Now that I'm here I don't really want to leave, either. The forest tunnel and the lake...

[She shudders, and she's pretty sure that's enough to get her point across. The cave has been a welcome respite from the awful things they've had to go through to get this far.]

I can definitely see why they decided to live here and not out there.

Eternal Fall

[Noctis has had a lot of weird dreams. It kinda comes with the territories of Sleeping Like a Rock and Childhood Trauma. But he's never dreamt of a forest like this one, with the air thick and quiet like a blanket's been draped over everything--at least until the crying starts, causing every hair not on his head to stand on end.

It's a dream, and the rules of logic don't apply, but he can't ignore the pained sounds. Sometimes it sounds like a person and sometimes like a wounded animal, but he has to see who or what it is and why they need help, so he's half-jogging in the direction the cries seem to come from.]

Help me out. We need to find what's making that noise.

[Congratulations, nearby person, you've been volunteered for a search and rescue mission.]

The Cry

[The source of the crying turns out to be...a lake. A nice fishing spot, if his dream was kind enough to provide him with proper gear, but alas it does not. If urban legends back home applied here, it wasn't the lake that was the source but rather something in or around the lake instead.

It's a stupid decision, really, to approach the water's edge, because Noctis narrowly dodges an attempt to grab one of his legs by an angry water creature.]

Crap, that was stupid.

[The merrow howls at him before dipping back in the water and...well, it doesn't resurface, but a blonde, white-clad figure struggles up and partway onto the bank, coughing up water and reaching out to him.]

Help me, please!

[It's just a dream, his fiancée is not in front of him partly drowned. It's a water monster.

...But maybe she is. This isn't the first time Luna's appeared to him in a dream, and the longer he looks at her the more he becomes convinced that perhaps he should grab her hand and help her up.]

It's nice to meet you, Ursula. I'm Yona.

[She's very aware that this is a really weird conversation to be having when they're both so close to just falling down, but Yona forces herself to keep talking all the same. It's easier for her when she has to make herself strong for the sake of someone else, when it's not just her on the line, the echoes of her father's voice hard to ignore but something she does her best to just speak right over.]

What did you teach?
